In 2013, the Rimrockers found themselves in a dilemma. In order to apply for an assessment grant from History Colorado, the Vestal House needed official designation as a historical landmark. There was no local designation set up and state designation would have been difficult. Therefore, RHS asked both the Town of Nucla and the county to pass resolutions that declared the Vestal House as a Landmark of Historical Significance.
Then RHS initiated a meeting in Montrose with a diverse group of historians, and formed a local, Historical Landmark Advisory Board, MCHLAB. The Vestal House was the first application to the board, and was then approved by the County Commissioners.
The Rimrockers and MCHLAB invite others to register their local historic sites or buildings. Contact us for assistance, or go to montrosecounty.net and search: Historic Landmark Advisory Board.
